GSM stands for grams per square meter. In apparel, it is a common way to describe fabric weight. Founders often use GSM as shorthand for whether a garment feels lightweight, midweight, or heavyweight—but GSM is only one part of how a fabric performs.
What GSM actually measures
GSM measures the mass of one square meter of fabric. A higher number generally means more material per area, but it does not automatically mean higher quality. Two fabrics with the same GSM can feel very different because of fiber type, knit structure, yarn, finishing, brushing, washing, and stretch.
Why apparel brands care about fabric weight
Weight affects drape, opacity, warmth, structure, shipping weight, cost, seasonality, and the customer's first impression. A heavyweight oversized tee can hold a boxier silhouette, while a lighter fabric may drape more closely to the body.
Do not market a product from GSM alone
Customers do not buy a number. They buy how the garment looks and feels. If you describe a shirt as “premium heavyweight,” the construction, collar, fit, softness, shrinkage, and finishing also have to support that promise.
Ask for fabric swatches
Before approving production, compare physical swatches and finished samples. Stretch the fabric, hold it to light, wash it, feel the inside and outside, and see how it behaves when worn. This is particularly important when changing mills or suppliers because a similar specification may not feel identical.
Fiber content changes the experience
Cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, elastane, and blended fabrics behave differently. Even within cotton, yarn and finishing choices matter. Activewear also requires attention to recovery, moisture behavior, abrasion, stretch, and opacity—not just weight.
GSM affects cost and fulfillment
Heavier fabric can increase raw-material cost and shipping weight. That does not mean you should avoid it; it means the economics need to support the product promise. Use GSM as a specification, not a quality score
A lightweight performance shirt can be excellent. A heavyweight hoodie can be poor. The target weight should match the use case, silhouette, climate, and brand positioning.
Keep approved fabric references
When you find a fabric you like, document the supplier, composition, weight, color reference, finishing, and any internal fabric code. Keep an approved physical swatch when possible. That makes future reorders easier to compare and helps prevent quiet substitutions.
Sample the finished garment
