A tech pack is a document that communicates how a garment should be made. Think of it as the product specification that turns a design idea into manufacturing instructions. It reduces ambiguity between the brand and the factory and creates a reference point when samples or bulk production do not match expectations.
What a clothing tech pack usually includes
- Front and back technical sketches
- Measurement specifications and tolerances
- Fabric composition and target weight
- Color references
- Construction and stitching details
- Artwork dimensions and placement
- Labels, trims, hardware, drawcords, zippers or buttons
- Packaging requirements
- Size grading information
- Revision notes
Why a tech pack matters
Without written specifications, different people can interpret the same phrase differently. “Heavyweight,” “oversized,” or “slightly cropped” are subjective. Measurements, fabric data, artwork dimensions, and construction notes turn those preferences into something a factory can reproduce.
Tech packs make sampling more efficient
A clear first specification can reduce unnecessary sample rounds because the factory knows what it is trying to achieve. When a sample needs revision, changes can be documented directly instead of being scattered across messages and photos.

Do small brands need one?
If you are decorating a standard blank with a simple screen print, you may not need an elaborate cut-and-sew tech pack. But as soon as you customize fit, fabric, washes, construction, trims, labels, or grading, a structured specification becomes increasingly valuable.
A tech pack is not a substitute for communication
The document should be reviewed with the factory. Ask questions, confirm capabilities, and make sure the supplier acknowledges changes. A perfect file does not help if the production team is working from an old version or interprets a construction detail differently.
Control versions
Label revisions clearly—Version 1, Version 2, Approved Production Version—and keep the final approved file in one place. If a measurement changes after a fit sample, update the actual document rather than relying on a chat message that someone may miss later.
Use tolerances realistically
Garment manufacturing is not identical to machining metal parts. Measurements can vary within reasonable tolerances. Work with the factory to define what is acceptable for each point of measure, especially on fabrics that stretch, shrink, or behave differently after wash.
Connect the tech pack to costing
Construction decisions affect price. Stitching, custom dyes, specialty fabrics, labels, trims, washes and decoration methods all change cost. A detailed tech pack gives suppliers a better basis for accurate quotes and helps prevent surprise increases after sampling.
Build a repeatable product-development system
As a clothing brand adds more styles, documented specifications become institutional memory. The goal is not paperwork for its own sake. The goal is to make great products repeatable even as factories, employees, or production volumes change.
